ENTREVISTA A: Shintaro Ohata

De pronto vagando en Tumblr encontré el trabajo de este artista japonés, inmediatamente me fascinó su pintura, y me fascinó mucho más cuando supe que no solo era pintura, sino que algunas de sus obras también incluían escultura. Agradezco a Shintaro Ohata y a la galería YUKARI ART CONTEMPORARY por las facilidades que me dieron para poder realizar la entrevista que a continuación comparto:

Who is Shintaro Ohata? / ¿Quién es Shintaro Ohata?

A painter based in Saitama district, Japan. The gallery representing me is located in Tokyo, Japan.  / Un pintor con base en el distrito Saitama, Japón. La galería que me representa está localizada en Tokyo.

What’s the thing that defines you? / ¿Cuál es la cosa que te define?

Shyness. / Timidez.

 

For you, what is Art? / Para ti, ¿Qué es arte?

Something that can make connections between people and me. / Algo que puede crear conexiones entre la gente y yo.

How did you start your career as an artist? / ¿Cómo empezaste tu carrera como artista?

The moment when I realized I want to create paintings as mush as I want. / El momento en que me dí cuenta que deseaba crear pinturas tanto como quiero.

What’s the coolest thing about being an artist? And the worst? /¿Cuál es la mejor y la peor cosa de ser artista?

The coolest thing: When my work touches people’s hearts. The worst thing: Becoming to hate paintings. / Lo más cool: Cuando mi obra toca el corazón de la gente. Lo peor: El odio volviéndose pintura.

 What inspires you? / ¿Qué te inspira?

Animation, Manga and Music. / Animación, manga y música.

How would you describe your work? / ¿Cómo describirías tu trabajo?

Lights. / Luces.

What is the creative process that you hold for each of your pieces? / ¿Cuál es el proceso creativo que llevas a cabo con cada una de tus piezas?

When my heart is moved by something during taking walks, listening to musics, watching movies and etc, I feel ”I want to share this with someone”. Then, I try to express that feeling through my own motifs and methods. / Cuando mi corazón se mueve por alguna cosa, cuando salgo a caminar, escuchando música, viendo películas, etc. Siento “Quiero compartir esto con alguien”, luego trato de expresar ese sentimiento a través de mis propios motivos y métodos.

Your sculptural paintings are AWESOME, how did you combine 2D with 3D? / Tus “Sculptural Paintings” son asombrosas, ¿cómo fue que combinaste el 2D con el 3D?

It all started from when I wondered ”how I can bring the atmosphere of my paintings to outside by placing my painting’s character as a sculpture between painted space and actual space outside of the painting.” / Todo inició cuando me pregunté “¿Cómo puedo traer la atmosfera de mis pinturas al exterior?, volviendo los personajes escultura y colocándolos entre la pintura y espacio fuera de ella.

A recurring in your work are girls, why is that? / Algo recurrente en tu trabajo son las chicas, ¿Porqué es esto?

Upon creating works, I first of all imagine “How the girls in my paintings look at the world?”. These thoughts lead me to the world of the paintings inside and I can then start to represent the world. / Creando las obras lo primero que imagino es “¿Cómo verán el mundo las chicas de mis pinturas?, estos pensamientos me llevan al mundo interior de mis pinturas y así puedo empezar a representar el mundo.

Someone who would you like to collaborate with and why? /¿Alguien con quién quisieras colaborar y porqué?

I can not think of anyone particular, but would like to collaborate with people who works in different categories from mine. / No puedo pensar en alguien en particular, pero me gustaría colaborar con personas que trabajen en cosas distintas a la mía.

Have you ever been to Mexico?, Do you know any Mexican artist? / ¿Has estado en México?, ¿Conoces algun artista mexicano?

I unfortunately haven’t been to Mexico yet. Frida Kahlo! /Desafortunadamente no he estado en México aún. Frida Kahlo!

Who are your favorite artists or designers? / ¿Quiénes son tus artistas o diseñadores favoritos?

Momoko Sakura(a Japanese Manga artist), Yoko Kanno(a Japanese composer, arranger and musician), Shunji Iwai(a Japanese film director/video artist, writer and documentarian), Joe Hisaishi (a Japanese composer and director), Hayao Miyazaki(a Japanese Manga artist, film director and animator) and many others.

What’s your next project? / ¿Cuál es tu siguiente proyecto?

My gallery is currently finalizing my next schedule as I have just finished my solo show in early this summer.

I am very happy that I receive many exhibition offers from many countries, however as it takes time for me to finish one work, I can not take many of them. / Mi galería está siendo finalizada, acabo de terminar mi exposición individual a principios del verano.

 He recibido propuestas para exponer en otros países, lamentablemente no puedo tomar todas estas ofertas porque necesito terminar obra.
